Arranging a cremation

Stained glass window in Oak chapel

We hope you will find the following information useful when arranging a cremation at Cheltenham crematorium.

Do I have to appoint a funeral director?

No. Funerals do not have to be arranged with the services of a funeral director. If you are appointing a funeral director, they will offer support and guidance as you make the funeral arrangements but if you need any further assistance please contact the bereavement office. Where we can guide you through every step of the way.

Choosing a funeral director

When arranging a funeral with a funeral director it is important you are completely satisfied with the service you receive. The funeral director should always supply an itemised estimate of what they will charge you for and be able to advise any difference in costs if the arrangements change.

Advise on costs can be found at the Money Advise Service
Funeral directors costs can be compared on Your Funeral Choice

It is worth noting that some funeral directors are members of professional organisations. For more information, please visit:

The National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD)
The Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF)

These organisations are run by and are for funeral directors. If you have cause to complain about a funeral director you can also contact Gloucestershire’s Trading Standards.

The Good Funeral Guide may also provide helpful information.

When can a cremation take place?

Cremations take place weekdays, Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays. Your funeral director will contact our office to book the cremation at an available and suitable date and time for you and your family.

Can I have a service before the cremation in either of your chapels?

Yes you can. We have a classic service which is a 35 minutes and is available in either the Oak or Willow chapel. To help with funeral poverty we recently introduced a sunrise service that is ten minutes long and available in our Willow chapel.

You can have a funeral service elsewhere followed by a committal service, available in both the Oak and Willow chapels.

For more information about our chapels and services please visit our chapels page.

What cremation paperwork do I need to complete?

Your appointed funeral director or a member of the bereavement services team can help you to ensure that you have correctly completed all of the relevant paperwork ahead of the cremation.

A cremation instruction form, and other medical paperwork, is required before a cremation can take place. Please visit our forms page for more information or feel free to contact us directly where a member of the bereavement team can assist you.

How much does a cremation cost?

The cost of a cremation depends very much on the type of service you require. Please visit our fees page for a full list of our current fees.
